Rugged Bear has partnered with Bear Trust International to support their free Bear Conservation Education Programs! The programs focus on students in grades K-12 and are designed to teach about conservation issues relating to bears by using science and math skills relevant to grade level.

What started out as a compilation of bear stories – from biologists, scientists and writers – called The Bear Book, became a curriculum when teachers suggested creating lessons to compliment the stories. With the seed planted, A.C. (Charles) Smid, founder of Bear Trust International, and Dr. Reynolds-Hogland, Bear Trust’s executive director, created an education program based off The Bear Book aimed at the youth of the U.S. and Canada.  (To read more about their journey creating this program go to: http://beartrust.org/smarter-than-your-average-bear.html)

With a wealth of research from cooperating organizations – Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Polar Bear International and Hudson Bay Project – the curriculums are full of authentic bear and environmental research. The lessons promote environmental literacy, conservation awareness through math, science and technology skills as they relate to the different bear species. Lessons include studies on bear population trends, avoidance of human-bear conflicts, bear-habitat interaction, and our affects on the bear population as humans. Students use their STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills through hypothetical field studies, making predictions and drawing conclusions based on information found by Bear Trust researchers and partners.

Bear Trust currently has two curriculum guides available for free download:  1) The Bear Essentials for students in grades K-8, and, 2) The Curriculum Guide to The Bear Book for students in grades 9-12.  To meet the needs of students and teachers nationwide, Bear Trust is currently developing The Bear Book Volume II and Curriculum Guide.  Volume II will include real data from field studies on wild bears, computer science technology, exciting stories about wild bears written by top bear scientists, and online tools. Tools such as Student BEAR Network and a Virtual Poster Session allow students to connect with each other worldwide.

Teachers and students can now download The Bear Book (9-12th grade) and curriculum guide online through the recently added Education Portal (http://beartrust.org/education-portal-2). More information can be obtained by contacting Bear Trust’s executive director: Melissa Reynolds-Hogland at Melissa@beartrust.org. The art of being a child…so many things come to mind. There are books, blogs and Twitter accounts dedicated to escapades in parenting and the funny things kids say and do. Kids are the ultimate artists, adventurers, thrill seekers, and explorers. Our Rugged Bear designers make clothing that will adapt to the different environments of play and learning our customer experiences on a daily basis. Though our designs, social media discussions and new product development we are constantly striving to answer the question: what is a Rugged Bear Kid?

Rugged Bear Kids are free spirits and creative thinkers on the path to world and self-discovery. They do not think of their day-to-day activities as a profession, but unknowingly take their job as a kid seriously. Their clothing serves as a uniform, as self-expression and as a protective layer for whatever life brings their way. Rugged Bear kids are not held captive by trends but rather follow their own unique styles to mix, match and create fun combinations. Classic style, function and comfort are important attributes in this little adventurer’s wardrobe. The Rugged Bear logo signifies quality, tradition and adventure.

Rugged Bear goes back to school!

10 Ways to get Ready for Back to School (Rugged Bear Style)!

1. Do one last summer activity. A beach or lake trip is great, but if you are pressed for time find a pool, bike ride in the park or go on a picnic! 2. Take inventory of your child’s school wardrobe from last year: what still fits, what is starting to look to worn, etc. […]

1. Do one last summer activity. A beach or lake trip is great, but if you are pressed for time find a pool, bike ride in the park or go on a picnic!

2. Take inventory of your child’s school wardrobe from last year: what still fits, what is starting to look to worn, etc. Make a list of outerwear, clothing, footwear and accessories needed (check out Rugged Bear’s fleece and light weight coats or pants and hoodie sets!).

3. Snap a photo on the first day back to school. Now that I think about this idea, I even had to do this for my senior year of high school. Although, seemingly unnecessary at the time, I am glad that my parents have those photos!

4. Have your child get reacquainted with school friends by planning a play date before the first day back.

5. Encourage at least one extracurricular activity whether it is school related or not. There is an abundance of fun clubs and classes from team sports to sewing to acting – let your child choose their favorite!

6. Look up new lunch or snack ideas to keep your kids from getting bored or making trades at school (check out Rugged Bear’s Pinterest for ideas!).

7. Tell your child a funny story from when you were their age or, if you really want them to laugh, show an old school picture or yearbook.

8. Make bedtime gradually a little earlier every night. Don’t you remember lying awake in bed the night before school started? It may have been nerves or excitement, but it probably also had to do with late summer nights. Bedtimes are hard to enforce, but it may make the transition to the school routine easier!

9. Buy fun school supplies! Who doesn’t like new notebooks and pencils with Hello Kitty or Batman on them?

10. Shop Rugged Bear’s new collection of mid-weight fleeces, three-piece pant sets, socks, crib shoes and, soon to come, ski jackets and pants!

Available at: Lord & Taylor (online also), Von Maur, Boscov’s, Denny’s Children’s Wear and Amazon.com!
